CLIVE STAPLES LEWIS (1898–1963) s-a nãscut la Belfast, într-o familie anglo-irlandezã a cãrei pasiune pentru lecturã i s-a transmis şi lui de la o vârstã fragedã. De îndatã ce a învãţat sã scrie, a trecut la primele exerciþii literare – povestiri despre „Şoricei îmbrãcaţi în zale“ si isprãvile lor cavalereşti. La patru ani le punea deja în vedere apropiaţilor cã doreşte sã i se spunã „Jacksie“, devenit mai târziu „Jack“. Tot în copilãrie trãieşte întâia oarã Bucuria, o experienţã fundamentalã, a cãrei semnificaţie avea s-o expunã pe larg în autobiografia sa spiritualã, Surprins de Bucurie (1955).A renunţat la creştinism, dupã propriile spuse, la 13–14 ani, când era elev la Cherbourg House, o şcoalã elementarã particularã din Malvern, mai ales ca urmare a învãţãturilor heterodoxe ale intendentei şcolii, Miss G.E. Cowie. Dupã o şedere de un an la Colegiul
Malvern, a luat lecţii cu un profesor particular, W.T. Kirkpatrick,sub a cãrui îndrumare a câştigat o bursã de studii la Oxford. În 1925 a fost ales fellow al Colegiului Magdalen, unde va preda aproape trei decenii, pânã la ocuparea catedrei de literaturã englezã medievalã şi renascentistã de la Cambridge (1954).
În 1929 revine la creştinism sau, mai exact, la teism, ca „cel mai sovãielnic şi mai abãtut convertit din toatã Anglia“. Pânã a ajunge însã la credinþa cã „Iisus Hristos este Fiul lui Dumnezeu“ aveau sã mai treacã doi ani. În 1933 publicã The Pilgrim’s Regress. În urmãtorii treizeci de ani scrie numeroase alte lucrãri de apologeticã sau spiritualitate creştinã: Miracles, The Four Loves, The Problem of Pain (trad. rom. în volumul Despre minuni. Cele patru iubiri. Problema durerii, Humanitas, Bucureşti, 1997), The Screwtape Letters (Sfaturile unui diavol bãtrân cãtre unul mai tânãr, Humanitas, Bucureşti, 2003), Mere Christianity (Creştinism, pur şi simplu, Humanitas, Bucureşti, 2004), The Great Divorce, A Grief Observed. În paralel, publicã science-fiction (Space Trilogy) şi literaturã pentru copii (Cronicile din Narnia, Rao, Bucureşti, 2006), abordând subiecte de inspiraþie creştinã. Între numeroasele sale lucrãrile ştiinţifice, se detaşeazã The
Allegory of Love: A Study in Medieval Tradition, Rehabilitations and Other Essays şi English Literature in the Sixteenth Century Excluding Drama.
